Visit Painswick Gloucestershire and the surrounding villages and stay in bed breakfast, hotel or self-catering accommodation provided by BedPosts members.
The old wool town of Painswick, and its 14th century greystone buildings, dates back to the 14th century amd stands on a hill in the Cotswolds.
In the parish churchyard there are more than 100 clipped yews, some of which have been there since 1714. Traditionally there were only 99 trees; it used to be said that every time the 100th was planted, the Devil removed it.
The 12 bells of Mary’s Church make a wondreful sound.
By the churchyard wall there is a pair of iron stocks, shaped like a pair of spectacles.
Every year on the Sunday following September 19, the church holds a Clypping ceremony - a medieval custom in which people join hands round the church whilst singing a hymn derived from an ale-swilling dance.
