Northleach, Gloucestershire, retains some of its Middles Ages importance, having a market square overlooked by one of the finest Cotswold wool churches.
The High Street has houses from all periods, some of which are half-timbered. One of these buildings is now the World of Mechanical Music, in what used to be the old school. It's a shop as you enter, but beyond is a collection of clocks and mechanical instruments from all over Europe, ranging from barrel organs to pianolas. Some are demonstrated for visitors' entertainment. Some restored items are for sale.
The town's wool church dates from the 15th century, a fine example of the English Perpendicular style. Inside you'll discover a grand collection of monumental brasses, commemorating the medieval wool merchants who brought prosperity to Northleach and who donated money to build the church.
