Visit Silchester Hampshire and the surrounding villages and stay in bed and breakfast, hotel or self-catering accommodation provided by BedPosts members.
Silchester is the site of the important Roman en-campment of Calleva Atrebatum, at the north-east end of Portway, the Roman road from Salisbury. The shape of the defences and of an oval amphitheatre can still be traced on the ground, and a section of the wall, nearly 2 miles long, faces the medieval parish church. The Calleva Museum contains casts of archaeological finds made at the site, though the more important finds are now on display in Reading Museum.
