Newton Abbot is a Devonshire market town. This “new town” (now “Newton”) is in fact several centuries old. Part of it once belonged to Torre Abbey, from which the “Abbot” part of the name came from. Newton Abbot was first a market centre, then an important railway junction.
In the town centre stands the lone tower of St Leonard's Church; the rest of the building was demolished in 1836. The Courtenays, Earls of Devon, built Devon Square and the Italian-style Courtenay Park in the mid-19th century. The town's notable buildings include Forde House, built in 1610, and Bradley Manor, built in 1419.
