Visit Maryport Cumbria and the surrounding villages and stay in B&B, hotel or vacation rental accommodation provided by BedPosts members.
In the 18th century the lord of the manor, Colonel Humphrey Senhouse, developed Maryport into a coal port, naming it after his wife, Mary. The pits are now closed and the docks, are used only by small fishing boats and for recreational sailing. It is a fascinating village, full of narrow streets, with a maze of walks around the docks and on to the harbour walls.
A large number of Roman altars was discovered while Colonel Humphrey Senhouse was building the town, all of this was presurved and can be seen in the senhousemuseum.
