Visit Colchester Essex and the surrounding villages and stay in bandb, hotel or holiday apartment accommodation provided by BedPosts members.
The town of Colchester in Essex, on a hill in rolling country, is a marriage between old and new. It use to be the capital city of the ancient British Chieftain Cunobelin (Old King Cole) who ruled much of south-east England. After this a great Roman city was built on the site by Claudius in AD 49-50. Boadicea, Queen of the Iceni, sacked it in AD 60 in a rebellion against the Romans. The Normans gave it a great castle. Cromwell’s army besieged the town in 1648, after which the two Royalist commanders of the defences were executed as rebels.
Visit the Natural History Museum and learn about Colchester's earthquake in 1884, the mammoths and hippos that used to roam the area, open salt marshes, beaches and underground creatures.
