Bridlington in the East Riding of Yorkshire is a seaside resort on the North Sea Coast with bathing beaches and the usual seaside amusements. It has been a small fishing port for many years and is still popular with sea anglers today. The town consists of two areas; the historic Old Town and Bridlington Quay which features the harbour. The old town, about a mile inland, is dominated by its priory church, founded in the reign of Henry I. The massive Bayle Gate, dating from about 1388, once a part of the priory buildings, is now a museum.
When Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles II, landed in Bridlington Quay in 1643 with arms purchased from the proceeds of the Crown Jewels, the harbour was bombarded and she retreated to Boynton Hall (c. 1550). This arrival embarrassed the owner, a Parliamentarian.
Sewerby Hall, just north-east of the town, is a Georgian mansion with gardens and a park.
