This borough includes some of London's most attractive residential areas, for example, the select village of Totteridge and Mill Hill, high on its green ridge with its old weather-boarded houses. There are pleasant rural walks on the semi-wild Hadley Common, part of the old Enfield Chase. The common's woodland and undergrowth stretch nearly two miles, from the still-rural village of Monken Hadley in the west to Cockfosters in the east.
Hadley Green, at Monken Hadley, is surrounded by 18th century houses and cottages. An obelisk set on the green in 1740 marks the site of the Yorkist victory of 1471 at the Battle of Barnet in the Wars of the Roses which brought about the accession to the Throne of Edward IV.. The nearby church has on its tower a unique copper cresset of the 18th century; this was filled with oil and lit as a beacon in times of crises.
The modern suburb of Hendon, to the south, contains the nucleus of an old village around the parish church. At West Hendon is the Grent Reservoir, better known as the Welsh Harp – a name taken from a nearby inn – a popular spot for sailing.
