Scarborough bed and breakfast & hotel accommodation

Visit Scarborough North Yorkshire and the surrounding villages and stay in bandb, hotel or self-catering accommodation provided by BedPosts members.

Scarborough is a seaside resort in North Yorkshire, population of about 40,000. The site of the old town was settled in medieval times. Visit the ruins of 11th century Scarborough Castle. Enjoy sandy beach, arcades, amusements, cafes, theatres and entertainment facilities.

Scarborough is a fishing village, seaside town, spa and historic site - it merges them all in a splendour of cliff scenery and sandy bays. Scarborough is seen best from Oliver's Mount, 500 ft. above sea-level. Cockle stalls, bingo halls, amusement arcades and all the seaside fun of the fair make a garish assembly where Scarborough's oldest streets come down to the sea south of the headland. Embraced but not swamped by it all is the harbour where cobles and mules (traditional fishing vessels), drifters and trawlers nose in and out alongside the covered fish market.

The headland is crowned by Scarborough Castle, a fantastic 12th century relic, and gulls wheel and scream against the cliffs below. North of the headland, pastel-coloured hotels and boarding houses gaze out across a glorious bay.

After reading about the historical places to visit you might want to extend your stay in a Scarborough B&B, hotel or inn.

Then called &lquo;Scarthaborg”, Scarborough was burned by Harald Hardrada in 1066 as scorched-earth policy against the Conqueror. The keep of the castle dates from the 12th century. The barbican, approached across the moat, was built 100 years later.

Anne Brontë is buried in the graveyard of St Mary's Church, which badly damaged in the Civil War. The autobiographical works of Sir Osbert Sitwell and Before the Bombardment give the flavour of this delightful place in the beginning of this century.
