Langsett is a small village in the northeast corner of the South Yorkshire Peaks.
Langsett provides the best starting point for exploring the river Porter. This area used to be farmland before Sheffield Corporation bought up the valley for water catchment. Many of the medieval cruck-framed farmhouses survive today, some still as dwellings but few as working farms.
Langsett Barn bears a datestone of 1621 and is now the village hall but is open during the season as a National Park Information Centre, and is worth a visit to see the functional beauty of the barn's ancient post and truss construction.
Explore the woods and shoreline of Langsett Reservoir or walk along the dam wall to reach the old stone-built hamlet of Upper Midhope. Above Langsett Reservoir, the Brook House Bridge gives access to the ancient trackway of the Cut Gate, an old drovers' road which started at Derwent and leads all the way to Penistone.
