Chester bed and breakfast & hotel accommodation

Visit Chester Cheshire and the surrounding villages and stay in B&B, hotel or holiday apartment accommodation provided by BedPosts members.

Chester is an ancient walled city on a sandstone spur north of the river Dee. The Romans established their major camp of Deva here in AD 79 to protect the surrounding fertile land from Welsh tribesmen, sea pirates and other marauders.

A Roman amphitheatre, measuring 314 ft by 286 ft, lies east of Newgate, and there are Roman remains, including a wonderful collection of coins, in the Grosvenor Museum in Grosvenor Street.

Chester has better-preserved enclosing ramparts than any other British city; much of the original Roman wall survives, but many of the towers and gates were added in the Middle Ages.

There is a 2-mile path round the crest of the red sandstone battlements. From King Charles’s Tower, in 1645, Charles I is said to have watched the defeat of his forces at the Battle of Rowton Moor.

Chester’s galleried streets, known as The Rows, date from the Middle Ages. Shops open on to balustraded walkways reached only by steps from the road.

The city has some ?ne timbered inns, and a number of the half-timbered Tudor houses, notably Bishop Lloyd’s House, God’s Providence House, and Old Leche House, have rich carvings cut deep into age-blackened wood. The red sandstone cathedral, in St Werburgh Street, is mainly 14th century. It was a Benedictine Abbey until its dissolution in 1540, and the following year it became the cathedral for the new diocese of Chester.
