The town of Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire is situated in the National Forest. The town's name marks the passing of an original Danish settlement into the hands of the La Zouch family, from Brittany. A grand terrace of houses in Classical style dates from the town's development as a spa in the 19th century. In the wide main street there are Elizabethan half-timbered houses standing alongside bow-fronted Georgian shops.
Behind the main street lie the ruins of Ashby de la Zouch Castle built in the 15th century by the first Lord Hastings. The present fortress was built on the site of an earlier Norman stronghold, but was “slighted” - that is, disarmed and partly demolished - in the Civil War. The most impressive portions that remain are the Great Hall and the kitchen. The chapel is ruined. Near it stands the Solar, the sun parlour occupied for a short time by Mary Queen of Scots.
Ashby (the full name is seldom used locally) was the setting for the tournament in Sir Walter Scott's novel, Ivanhoe.
The church has family tombs, an effigy of a 15th-century pilgrim, and a finger-pillory believed to have been used on those people whose behaviour was offensive in church!
